Planning your Dream Wedding should be one of best the times of your life, but with so many well meaning friends and family telling you what you should do, stress can set in fast. Most likely, you have never done this before, so be patient with yourself. This is not an easy task, so it is easy to feel overwhelmed.
How do you find the right match for you? How do you know whom to trust? Where do you go for advice?
1. How many weddings do you do per year?
This is an extremely important question. You want someone who has experience specifically with weddings. Not only will they be more skilled in their craft, this also makes them a valuable source of information and ensures that your wedding day goes smoothly.
2. When did YOU do your very first wedding?
A follow-up to number 1, this question is even more important, because it is something they cannot easily fudge on. Everyone had to have a first time, so when was theirs? Number 1 is very open ended, allowing them to tell you what they think you want to hear. Unlike asking them how long they have done weddings, by asking this way they will have to be more honest. You really need to know the truth about their experience.
3. What do you feel is the most important about (name their product or service) for my wedding?
Very important to ask this open ended question, then let them talk. Their answer will first let you know if they have any creative ideas to make your wedding a Dream Wedding. Plus, it will give you their own perspective on the importance of their product or service. Are they a team player who wants to serve you, or do they think theirs is the most important part of the wedding? If so, they are likely to be bossy and may try to run your whole wedding, possibly ruining your day with their bad attitude.
4. How much will you cost?
Price is usually relative, especially when factoring in experience, expert skill and style. Generally, the most talented and creative professionals have a higher price tag because they are worth it.
5. What is included in that cost and what is additional?
Wedding vendor packages usually vary, so it's likely that you won't be able to compare one vendor exactly to the next without doing a little figuring. The lowest cost isn't necessarily the best deal. Some higher quotes may include services that you have to pay extra for in other packages. Make sure you take this into account.
6. How much is the deposit to book you?
7. What happens if I cancel, or if you cancel?
Find out if your deposit is refundable under any conditions. Does the wedding vendor have a back up plan if something happens to them?
8. Do you use a contract?
If the answer is no, RUN. A contract should state the services to be performed, the products included, and the price you will pay. Get it in writing.
9. What insurance do you carry?
The answer you are looking for here is liability and property damage. Today, many wedding reception venues require all vendors to provide proof of insurance before being allowed to serve events at their venue. Do NOT make the mistake of asking IF they carry insurance. Sure they may have automobile insurance, but most "fly-by-night" operations do not invest in proper coverage. This is a sign of a reputable business.
If chosen wisely, the right wedding vendors will become your Dream Wedding Team, giving you expert help and advice...for free!
